The watch came to fruition thanks to the collaboration of Richard Mille and his close friend of many years, Jean Todt. Some will recall Todt being the mastermind behind Michael Schumacher's repeated success at the wheel of a blood red Ferrari, claiming five World Championships to add to his previous two with Benetton.
Some sort of deep dive into the Richard Mille RM UP-01 , an incredibly deep dive on a really thin watch 01 UPmanship practice. When we first announced the actual debut of the Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferrari, the response was undoubtedly mixed.
Richard Mille has raised the bar in watchmaking with materials and mechanisms that beggar belief. along with a cast of high-profile friends including Jean Todt - president of Formula

ElBf88. One comes from the world of fast cars, the other from haute horlogerie. But French racing giant Jean Todt and Swiss watchmaker Richard Mille both hold a high regard for impeccable engineering and precision performance. While professions may set them apart, the camaraderie between both men is hardly surprising. Mille is, after all, a well-known collector of fast cars and automotive memorabilia and Todt is one of motorsport’s most recognisable names. But it was really the 71-year-old’s son Nicolas who brought about this friendship, when he introduced Todt to Richard Mille’s fantastical world of avant-garde timepieces. The rest, as we know, is history. “Richard has become a friend; he’s a part of the family. He’s a creative genius who has succeeded in doing something with technology that no one had mastered until now,” says Todt of the watchmaker, before singling out the example of the technical breakthrough Richard Mille achieved with its Rafael Nadal timepieces, which are fitted with a tourbillon of a mere From Left Yohan Blake and Jean Todt As much as Mille is a master of his trade, so is Todt. His achievements over the years in the automobile industry are as impressive as the horological marvels Mille produces. Calling him a motorsport legend would hardly be an understatement. The Frenchman, who is president of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile FIA, started out in the industry as a professional rally co-driver before becoming Director of Peugeot Talbot Sport in 1982. Following an illustrious stint at the motorsport team, Todt went on to run Scuderia Ferrari for over 15 years, before leaving his post as a board member to take up his current role in 2009. It is befitting that Richard Mille debuted a timekeeper bearing Todt’s name in 2012 The RM 036 Tourbillon G-Sensor Jean Todt. Drawing on Todt’s involvement with the FIA Action for Road Safety, Mille set out to craft a watch that would offer a tangible solution to road safety issues. As such, he worked with Todt and his team to develop a mechanism to help interpret physical constraints experienced by the human body due to rapid deceleration, in order to make drivers become more aware of the dangers on the road. Developed and patented by Renaud Papi exclusively for Richard Mille, the G-sensor system comprises over 50 parts but measures a mere 17mm. It translates the movement of a small internal mechanism into an indicator that visually displays the number of G’s accumulated by the wearer, on a scale on the dial. This scale also features a colour range, which indicates if the deceleration is safe green zone or unsafe red. Only 15 units were produced for this watch, which was officially unveiled at an FIA awards ceremony in Istanbul, with sales profits going towards two initiatives closest to Todt’s heart The FIA Action for Road Safety global campaign, and the ICM Brain and Spine Institute. RM 58-01 World Timer Jean Todt Its success led Richard Mille to release a second ticker in the man’s honour soon after. The RM 58-01 World Timer Jean Todt alludes to Todt’s hectic travel schedule and features a world time function with 24 time zones on its dial. Interestingly, unlike most other time zone watches, RM 58-01 does not require the pressing of a pusher to switch between time zones. Instead, the time is set by simply rotating the bezel anti-clockwise and shifting the name of the current city at the 12 o’clock position. Furthermore, a 24-hour scale engraved on the flange is split into white and black to indicate day and night hours respectively. Its impressive 10-day power reserve also makes this timepiece especially handy for frequent travellers. Only 35 pieces of this watch was released. RM 056 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary To mark Todt’s 50th year in motorsport, Richard Mille turned out not one — but three timepieces in his honour. The trilogy is headlined by the RM 056 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary, a visually arresting model featuring a completely transparent case machined from a single block of solid sapphire crystal. Sapphire crystal is not easy to work with, hence every case took more than 1,000 hours to create, with nearly 430 hours spent on grinding it to the desired shape and another 350 hours to polish it to a high shine. Fitted with a manual winding calibre RMCC1, this skeletonised timekeeper also offers a split-seconds chronograph function and is regulated by a one-minute tourbillon. Also on its dial is a power display the watch has a reserve of about 70 hours and a torque indicator that supplies information about the mainspring’s tension. Only three units of this timepiece will be available. RM 050 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary There is also the RM 050 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary, which bears a TPT Quartz case in blue, Todt’s favourite colour. Extremely light yet robust, its chassis is derived from stacking 600 layers of silica, each about 45 microns thick, which is then injected with blue resin and heated at over 120 deg Celsius. Like RM 056, this is powered by the RMCC1 calibre, although it is 20 percent lighter to be exact due to an extremely skeletonised baseplate and bridges, and ultra-lightweight materials such as carbon nanofibre and titanium. The watch comes in only five pieces. RM 11-03 Fly-back Chronograph Jean Todt 50th Anniversary Rounding up the collection is the RM 11-03 Flyback Chronograph Jean Todt 50th Anniversary, first presented at the brand’s Chantilly Art & Elegance festival last year. Inspired by automobiles and their rich histories, it is equipped with an automatic flyback chronograph. At the 12 o’clock position is an oversized semi-instantaneous date display window that offers an automatic adjustment for months of 30 or 31 days. Powered by twin barrels, the timepiece offers up to 55 hours of reserve. All this is housed within the same blue TPT Quartz case as the RM 050 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary. It will be produced in 150 pieces only. As they say, legends are made, not born. And watches like these provide admirers opportunity and reason to cherish and relive the journey to greatness.
To call Richard Mille a “luxury sensation” would probably be accurate. The super high-end Swiss watch brand likely considers this almost $150,000 timepiece practically entry-level given its many million-dollar-plus creations – and yet, so much of why Richard Mille as a watchmaker is popular is in this particular limited edition watch. In a captivating marbled blue and white case produced from Quartz TPT material – the Richard Mille RM 11-03 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary timepiece is a salute to a friend of the brand as well as proof that even high-luxury can be trendy. “Timeless and classic” are not terms you’d generally hear from anyone speaking about Richard Mille products – especially people at the company itself. Inspired by the philosophy of a total focus on the performance-over-cost mentality borrowed from other industries such as the world of Formula 1 racing, Richard Mille products are all about pushing the envelope of possibility. All images by David Bredan Depending on who you ask, that push by Richard Mille seems to be equally in areas of technical mechanics, design, marketing strategy, and of course, pricing. Let’s return to this particular limited edition of 150 pieces RM 11-03, which again sees Richard Mille paying homage to Mr. Jean Todt of racing, Ferrari, and Formula 1 fame. The particular purpose of the watch is on the thinner side, being directly attributed to celebrating the 50th anniversary of Jean Todt’s “career.” More specifically, like many other luxury watches, this product is, in fact, an authentic celebration trophy for Mr. Todt, his buddies, and fans I wrote here why watches make the best trophies. The celebration is indeed for Mr. Todt and Richard Mille as opposed to the buyers themselves, but it is a tacit reminder by Richard Mille to its consumers that “you should make or buy a watch when you too have such a celebration to recognize.” It is well established in the luxury world that consumers no matter their budget level are the most inspired to purchase something such as watch when they are seeking to commemorate something. It’s a great opportunity for Richard Mille to experiment with colors and further develop the legendary RM 11 watch collection which helped put the brand on the map. In its advanced form, the RM 11 has the same useful movements, but an exotic case produced from Quartz TPT, a material produced in Switzerland and borrowed from performance vehicles. The material is a dense layering of hundreds of sheets of silica which are mere microns thick for each layer. The blue is merely cosmetic, but it wouldn’t be a Richard Mille without an invigorated splash of color. Richard Mille first released a Quartz TPT-cased watch back in 2015 with the RM 27-02 Rafael Nadal. In that previous article you can learn more about the lightweight, yet very strong and visually interesting material. No, it isn’t as iconic as gold or platinum but you can’t “impregnate” – which is the actual term Richard Mille uses – those traditional luxury materials with colors such as blue, red, green, yellow, and white as has been done to a range of high-end limited watches by the brand. A brief look at Richard Mille watches produced from Quartz TPT covered on aBlogtoWatch demonstrates the visual variety available – more so, how successful use of exotic and modern materials such as this have been for a brand like Richard Mille. Richard Mille himself, and the brand do indeed hang closely with people like Mr. Todt. Part of the honesty in their relationship is what makes limited editions such as this perhaps more interesting to watch lovers than those we see from many other watch brands where the relationship feels a lot more like simple marketing. That Jean Todt and Richard Mille would continue to celebrate Todt’s life and achievements together makes sense – partially because Mr. Todt himself is the archetype of someone who should be a Richard Mille customer. More so, this RM 11-03 is far from the most expensive timepiece Richard Mille has made in honor of the man. With that said, it happens to be particularly nice. Perhaps it is because blue as color is particularly en vogue right now, or because of how nicely the RM 11 collection has aged. What makes this watch special from a watch collector’s perspective is that the caliber RM11 movement continues to stand out. The 4Hz, 55 hour power reserve automatic combined both a chronograph as well as an annual calendar month as well as a big date indicator together. As practical as this combination seems to be, few if any other watch brands have attempted to offer a competing product. The RM11 movement also looks fantastic. Entirely skeletonized, being produced using finely finished titanium bridges, the movement view is a less than subtle reminder to the owner of why an item such as this might cost so much. Few brands are as skilled as Richard Mille when it comes to displaying modern microcosms in their full mechanical glory. In an age when mechanical watches are increasingly distinct from their smartwatch siblings, showing off the guts of your watch has never been more popular. The RM 11-03 in the Quartz TPT case follows the classic Richard Mille tonneau-shape but with some crenelation for the case screws. It is wide, tall, and thick. The watch comes on a “vented” custom black rubber strap and looks about as much like a contemporary super-machine on the wrist as you could hope for. If you need to explain why Richard Mille does as well as it does, it is because it respects the rules of traditional watchmaking while incorporating almost entirely modern design elements and themes. Richard Mille watches are also not at all shy about being noticed – and what I think is common across all Richard Mille owners is that they are happy about the perceived attention. As a limited edition of 150 pieces, the Richard Mille RM 11-03 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary watch has a retail price of $140,000 USD.
To celebrate the 50th career anniversary of Mr. Jean Todt, the president of the FIA —Federation Internationale de l'Automobile—, Richard Mille released the RM 11-03 Jean Todt Limited Edition during the 3rd Edition of Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille Concours d’Élégance. The FIA is the governing body of motor sports and the organization that aims to safeguard the rights and promote the interests of motorists and motor sports. The third watch released by Richard Mille in collaboration with Jean Todt —the first one the RM 036 Tourbillon G-Sensor Jean Todt, the second one the RM 58-01 World Timer Jean Todt, the fourth one the RM 056 Jean Todt Sapphire and the fifth one the RM 050 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary Tourbillon Split Seconds Chronograph we featured here—, the RM 11-03 Jean Todt available in a limited edition of only 150 pieces, features a striking blue case —a first for Richard Mille— with a redesigned vented black rubber strap, a flyback 12-hour chronograph, 60-minute countdown and annual calendar. The DialVery similar in design to all other RM 11s, the Richard Mille RM 11-03 Jean Todt Limited Edition features a dial almost identical to most Felipe Massa's limited editions with the exception of the white writing between 8 and 7 o'clock that reads RM11-03 J. Todt. Fitted with a sapphire dial with a mere thickness of mm, the Richard Mille Jean Todt features a flyback chronograph, a 60-minute countdown timer and an annual calendar in what we think is a relatively busy dial but that follows the unmistakable look of Richard Mille watches. The dial layout features a running seconds indicator at 3 o'clock, a monocounter 12-hour chrono register at 6 with hour and minute indicator, a 60-minute countdown timer indicator at 9 o'clock, a double date window located at 12 o'clock that displays the date thanks to a double sapphire disc system located at 10 and 2 o'clock respectively and a clever numeric month indicator located between 4 and 5 o'clock. The dial features yellow and green accents throughout the tachymetric scale and the registers and the skeletonized hands with luminescent material have bright red contrasting tips. The Case & StrapFollowing the design principle of all other RM11-03s recalling the world of motor sports, the case of the Richard Mille RM11-03 Jean Todt features the same silhouette that first appeared with the RM 27-01 Rafael Nadal. Still maintaining a tripartite case construction, the case is made of NTPT Blue Carbon and NTPT Black Carbon. While we absolutely love the NTPT technology Richard Mille uses, we are not too fond of the blue washed off look on the bezel and case back of this new watch. Equipped with the traditional oversized pullout crown, this time the crown features a design borrowed from competition wheel rims and tires with grooves and treading on its blue O-ring. The specially shaped and engraved pushers are fully in line with the highly recognizable design cues of the RM 011 collection with etched lines inspired by the pedal surfaces of racing cars. The Richard Mille RM11-03 Jean Todt Limited Edition is equipped with a new redesigned vented black rubber strap with titanium DLC-coated double folding clasp. This newly redesigned strap features more prominent and angular vents opposed to the more rectangular vents on all the other Richard Mille rubber straps. The MovementThe beating heart inside the Richard Mille RM11-03 Jean Todt Limited Editon is the new RMAC3 automatic calibre. Accentuated by an upper bridge in satin-brushed grade 5 titanium that contrasts with the rest of the movement —also crafted in titanium but with a PVD coating—, its two barrels mounted side by side, ensure stable coupling while providing a power reserve of around 55 hours. The 4 Hz free sprung balance is highly resistant to shocks and can be tuned more precisely than a traditional balance wheel. This new movement is also fitted with a new variable-geometry rotor in grade 5 titanium, inspired by the aerodynamic front spoiler wings seen in Formula 1 cars. This special rotor, makes possible to adjust the automatic winding of the watch to the wearer’s activity level by varying the inertia of the rotor thanks to two microblasted and chamfered wings in 18K white gold. Offering six possible positions, the grade 5 satin-brushed and PVD-treated titanium rotor is mounted on ceramic ball bearings. On the Wrist & PricingOn the wrist, the Richard Mille RM11-03 Jean Todt Limited Edition wears true to its size and with impressive wrist presence. The watch wears loud due to its NTPT blue case construction but extremely comfortably. While we are not crazy about the blue hue on the case of this new Richard Mille, we can definitely see ourselves wearing this watch as one of those eye-catching timepieces that complement a very large and highly valuable watch Richard Mille RM11-03 Jean Todt Limited Edition is perfect for filling that empty spot in a watch box full of other Richard Mille watches, but not necessarily to be your first Richard Mille timepiece. The good thing about Richard Mille’s design is that it is so special and avant-garde that is really hard to dislike them, despite the use of a crazy color combination like on this particular watch. The Richard Mille RM11-03 Jean Todt is available in a 150-piece limited edition. Sticker Price $140,000 USD. For more info on Richard Mille click here.
